How Trump II seems to be pushing the legal envelope—and changing how orgs should think about applying for workforce cash.

Answering the fun question of “Is this illegal?”

And if it is, will anyone do anything?

Arnold Schwarzenegger. Jay Shetty. And You.

Codie Sanchez, Colin & Samir, Joanna Stern, and Oliver Darcy are here too. They all built newsletters (and podcasts and communities and websites) on beehiiv.

Some came with massive followings. Others built theirs along the way. That’s the thing about beehiiv: with so many ways to earn and grow, the platform is ready for whatever you’re building next.

More money, new problems?

We’ve had a quiet but significant development in how Trump II is spending workforce funding in the past few weeks, based on recent grants announcements.

It’s something that I would really pay attention to if I had project I’d like to be federally funded in the near future, because it could mean much more money in the near term and potentially much less money in the still-pretty-near-but-not-right-now term. It also could have implications for grant programs you might not expect, such as YouthBuild, because of how it plays with the rules of how money gets awarded.

But it’s also something that I think is really helpful in understanding how policy and money come out of the black box of federal workforce agencies. I hear a lot of questions about why funding awards go the directions they go or look the way they do—and big complaints that agencies really should do something much more responsive.

But there are a number of factors—legal, political, functional—that can make it harder to be “responsive” even with a blank slate. The money announced in recent weeks is a good illustration of why.

Oh, and because it’s Trump II, this is legally, um, innovative in a way I’m not sure I would risk if I were a decisionmaker.
