Between the lines of Workforce Pell’s early approvals.

Today marks seven weeks since Workforce Pell funds became available for workforce programs. Yesterday, the Education Department announced it had approved the second program that can receive funding from the program: a clinical medical assistant program in Indiana that joins an EMT program in Iowa announced as the first program at the top of the month.

Trump II’s rules for Workforce Pell made it clear that very short programs are what it will most likely fund. I suspect this is a slower pace of approvals than when the Hill was suggesting Workforce Pell would fix everything from chronic unemployment to popcorn kernels getting stuck between your teeth. Workforce Pell’s approval process is complicated. Its strongest advocates have cautioned that slow approvals are a good thing because it means better quality control.

That quality control aspect was one reason why I dug into some of the underlying data on these initial approvals. I found some good reason for the early questions I’ve heard about what jobs Workforce Pell is really for and whether it will be the advancement Trump II says it will be for workers by routing them away from degrees that “don’t pay off.
