The floor for congressional AI-and-workforce hearings is handwaving away the mass unemployment of millions of workers. Quite blessedly, the Senate HELP Committee stayed well above that in a hearing on Wednesday afternoon.
That’s not surprising since this was a pretty great panel of witnesses, including Justin Heck over at Opportunity@Work. (O@W just launched an AI Readiness Lab with Brookings that will look at regional solutions to AI workforce issues. O@W’s research has flagged AI chipping away at gateway jobs that can lead to better-paying work, which I discussed with Justin a few months back.)
And while there was not a ton of breaking news from this hearing in an active Wednesday for Senate committees, there were a couple of things I’d take note of for future AI-and-workforce conversations—including changes that could make it easier not to offload workers for automation.
